CULTURAL PRESENTATIONS (Unit III)

It is important for nurses to recognize and appreciate the cultural diversities of patients. Cultural preferences are a crucial factor in food and dietary choices. To better understand these cultures, students are asked to explore and present the cultural dietary preferences of different ethnic, religious, and other populations.

GUIDELINES FOR GROUP CULTURAL PRESENTATION


1. Give a brief description of your culture (geographic, socioeconomic) that includes both the origin population and the population in the United States.

2. Using the MyPyramid (United States), list common staples and excesses / deficiencies of that culture. Include that country’s (or population’s) pyramid if available.

3. Describe cultural norms in regard to dietary regimens and trends.

4. Identify health problems / concerns related to this cultural diet. Discuss the pros and cons of this diet.

5. Discuss how hospitalization may affect a patient’s nutritional status in terms of their beliefs, observances and preferences. Show ways to help the patient adap and adjust to any change required.

6. Presentation should be a celebration. Group participants are encouraged to dress and act the part of the culture.

7. Each group must submit a handout or brochure
    • Showing the population pyramid if available
    • Indicating 4 important considerations that might impact nursing care

8. Reference page with a minimum of 3 references
    • 1 can be Nix textbook
    • Others can be textbooks, professional journal articles, or appropriate websites

This is a timed presentation. Each group should present for a minimum of 15 minutes, maximum of 20 minutes.

Pay special attention to #7. These 4 important nursing considerations will become integrated into the Unit III test.

Cultural celebration date is scheduled for Thursday, December 3, 2009.
