Course Description
The content of this course is correlated with the Medical and Surgical Course. It is designed to give the student an understanding of principles on which dietary modifications are made in relation to the medical and surgical conditions which are being discussed. The student will study and learn correlations between diet and diagnosis. The student will understand how diets are modified with concern for social, cultural, medical and nutritional histories.
Method of Evaluation
Diet Therapy questions are integrated into corresponding Medical-Surgical unit tests.
Course Progression
A 75 average of the Med Surg Unit exams is required to pass Diet Therapy
Term II (2010 - 2011)
Unit I
General principles of therapeutic diets are described. Diet planning, modification of basic hospital diets, and the nurse’s role in diet therapy is covered. Nutrition during the perioperative phase is discussed with an emphasis on optimal nutrition for wound healing.
